The .CSI file format primarily functions as a Tax Challan Status Inquiry file. It is generated and downloaded from the Indian government's TIN NSDL (Protean) portal. This file contains transactional data about tax payments (Challans) and is strictly used to validate Quarterly TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) returns via the government's Return Preparation Utility (RPU) or File Validation Utility (FVU).
While essential for Indian tax compliance, the .CSI file has major limitations. It is a highly specialized, raw text-based data file that lacks standard formatting. You cannot easily read the data to verify challan details manually, and it requires proprietary desktop utilities to process. Opening it directly in standard spreadsheet software often results in a garbled mess of unparsed text. (Note: A tiny fraction of .CSI files belong to ContentServ Include files or Campbell Scientific EdLog programs, which are completely different text scripts).
