The .CSI (Challan Status Inquiry) file is a specialized data file generated by the TIN NSDL (now Protean) portal in India. It contains detailed records of tax payments and is strictly required to validate Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) returns using the official Return Preparation Utility (RPU) or File Validation Utility (FVU). Users generally process these files using specialized tax software or government-provided Java tools.
The major disadvantage of the .CSI format is its proprietary, machine-oriented structure. It is designed purely for automated validation, not for humans. Opening it in a basic text editor reveals confusing, raw data strings. It requires a cumbersome Java runtime environment and specific tax utilities just to read the contents, which often frustrates accountants trying to do a quick manual check.
