A .JST file usually serves one of three distinct purposes, creating confusion for users trying to open one. Primarily, it is a JavaScript Template file used by web development libraries like Underscore.js or Lo-Dash. These files contain a hybrid of HTML markup and JavaScript logic, designed to generate dynamic web pages on the fly. Alternatively, it may be a JSteg steganography file containing encrypted data hidden inside images, or a Jnes Save State storing progress for Nintendo emulation.
The core problem with .JST templates is that they are not standalone documents. Because they are code fragments waiting for data, you cannot simply double-click them to see a rendered webpage; doing so usually prompts an "Open With" dialog or displays raw, unformatted code in a text editor. Similarly, Jnes save states are strictly proprietary binaries - attempting to open them in other emulators or players will fail due to version specific encoding. JSteg files are intentionally obfuscated and require specific passphrases.
For web templates, the most practical workflow is converting .JST to TXT or HTML (Source Code) to review the syntax without needing a compilation engine. For documentation purposes, converting code to PDF ensures the formatting is preserved for archiving. If you are dealing with a Jnes save state, conversion is generally not possible; these files must be loaded directly into the Jnes Emulator.
