About EST files
The .EST file extension is primarily a Trip Planning Map File created by the discontinued Microsoft Streets & Trips. It stores route data, waypoints, and map settings using a proprietary Microsoft Compound file structure. It is also heavily used for Construction Cost Estimates by software like Trimble WinEst, for CNC stone machine projects by Intermac, and as software activation tokens for BMW E-Sys. Because the main map format was abandoned by Microsoft in 2013, legacy .EST files are obsolete and extremely difficult to open on modern operating systems. The format is strictly proprietary. You cannot open it natively in web browsers or standard text editors without seeing scrambled data. It often requires a specialized legacy environment. Users typically want to convert .EST routes to standard GPS formats like GPX or KML for Google Maps, or extract estimate data into CSV or PDF for spreadsheet use. Standard online converters usually fail because of the closed, proprietary format of these different .EST variants. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data.
