About CST files

The .CST extension is a classic example of a 'polymorphic' file type, causing significant frustration for users who don't know the file's origin.

  1. Roland CutStudio Design File (Most Common): These are vector graphic files created by Roland CutStudio for vinyl cutters. They contain lines, curves, and text paths specifically tuned for plotter hardware. The main problem is proprietary lock-in; a .CST file from CutStudio generally cannot be opened in Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW without conversion. Users typically need to convert these to EPS, PDF, or SVG to share designs with print shops or use standard vector editors.
  2. Adobe Director Cast File: A legacy multimedia container from the discontinued Adobe Director (formerly Macromedia). These files (sometimes labeled external casts) hold assets like bitmaps, scripts, and audio. Since Director is End-of-Life, these files are digital artifacts. Users often need to extract the content into modern formats like PNG, MP3, or MP4.
  3. CST Studio Suite Project: High-end electromagnetic simulation files used by Dassault Systèmes. These are complex engineering files containing 3D models and simulation parameters. They are strictly professional and often require export to STEP or IGES for CAD interoperability.
  4. Configuration & Settings: Several applications, including Call of Duty and Apple Logic Pro, use .CST for saving user preferences or channel strip settings. These are generally text-based or XML-based and rarely require conversion, but rather viewing or editing in a text editor.

Recommendation: Because .CST files vary wildly from vinyl cutting paths to 3D simulations, simply double-clicking usually fails.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CST file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DBF, PRJ, SHP, CXT, ZIP, CSV, PDF, SHX, JPG, WS, EPS, DCR and NKI files.

The CST Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CST converter.
