The .TML file extension is highly fragmented, serving entirely different purposes depending on the software that created it. Most commonly, it functions as a Touch Portal page layout containing remote control macros, which is formatted internally as JSON. Alternatively, web developers encounter it as a Tapestry Markup Language template used by the Apache Tapestry framework, where it acts as an XML or HTML-like document for rendering web components.
The primary disadvantage of the .TML format is its extreme lack of standardization. Because operating systems do not recognize it natively, double-clicking the file usually results in a frustrating 'How do you want to open this file?' prompt. While code editors can force it open as plain text, they will fail to apply correct syntax highlighting automatically. In more obscure cases, a .TML file might be a binary game asset (such as texture libraries in Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis) or proprietary marking machine instructions, which are completely unreadable in standard desktop applications.
To make these files usable and editable, you must align them with their underlying data structure. For web development and easy code review, convert Tapestry templates to HTML or XML.
