About IDV files

The .IDV file extension represents an Inventor Design View file, natively utilized by Autodesk Inventor. These files act as visual blueprints, storing specific display states, camera angles, lighting conditions, and component visibility settings for complex 3D assemblies. They are highly proprietary and inherently disadvantaged for sharing because they do not contain the core 3D geometry. Instead, they act as companion files referencing parent IAM (Assembly) and IPT (Part) files. Consequently, opening an .IDV requires an expensive Autodesk subscription. Users typically want to convert .IDV files into universally accessible formats like PDF, JPG, or universal 3D interchange formats like STEP and IGES to share visual progress with clients or non-engineers. However, standard online converters fail spectacularly here. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary format heavily reliant on external dependencies. Often, only the original Autodesk Inventor software can properly read and export the data. Despite these steep limitations, convert.guru provides a pragmatic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Because .IDV files utilize a Microsoft Compound internal structure, our advanced analysis tools can peek inside the binary to extract embedded metadata, textual references, or internal thumbnails. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IDV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IDW, IAM, IPT and IPJ files.

FAQ

If you want to convert IDV file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use Autodesk Inventor or similar software from the "3D Assembly View State" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to IDV, try Autodesk Inventor or another comparable tool in the "3D Assembly View State" category.

The IDV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IDV converter.
