About IDV files
The .IDV file extension represents an Inventor Design View file, a specialized format generated by Autodesk Inventor. These files function as lightweight snapshots or configuration definitions for complex 3D assemblies (IAM files).
Instead of storing the full heavy geometry of every part, an .IDV file typically saves specific view states - such as camera angles, zoom levels, component visibility, and color overrides - allowing engineers to share specific perspectives without transferring the entire intellectual property or massive datasets.
However, this is a common source of difficulty for recipients: .IDV files are often useless without the accompanying assembly data, acting merely as a set of instructions rather than a standalone model. They are strictly proprietary, meaning they cannot be opened in standard viewers like Adobe Acrobat or generic CAD tools. To share these views with clients or manufacturing partners who lack a $2,000+ Inventor subscription, the most practical solution is converting them to PDF for 2D review, WebP for quick email previews, or DWG if 2D vector data is required.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IDV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IDV file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use Autodesk Inventor or similar software from the "CAD Assembly Visualization" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to IDV, try Autodesk Inventor or another comparable tool in the "CAD Assembly Visualization" category.
The IDV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IDV converter.
