About IDW files

The .IDW file extension represents a 2D vector drawing created by Autodesk Inventor, a premier computer-aided design application for 3D mechanical design. These files serve as the technical documentation layer, containing projected views, dimensions, BOMs (Bills of Material), and annotations derived from linked 3D parts (Reference files) and assemblies.

While powerful for engineering, the .IDW format presents significant challenges for external collaboration. It is a proprietary Microsoft Compound binary format that strictly requires Autodesk Inventor or the specialized Inventor View utility to open. This creates a "proprietary lock-in," forcing recipients to install heavy software or pay for expensive subscriptions just to view a drawing. Additionally, .IDW files are not web-friendly and cannot be opened in standard browsers or mobile devices.
