About AIM files
The .aim file extension is a legacy format with a split personality, most commonly originating as a log or launch file from the now-defunct AOL Instant Messenger. For nearly two decades, these files stored chat histories or acted as scripts to launch the messenger service. While AOL discontinued the service in 2017, many users still possess archived .aim files containing nostalgic conversations. These files are typically text-based but may lack a standard extension, making them difficult to open on modern systems without a dedicated text editor like Notepad++.
Beyond instant messaging, .aim refers to the AIMMS ASCII Model File, a text-based format used by AIMMS (Advanced Integrated Multidimensional Modeling Software) to store optimization models and variables. In the gaming world, .aim serves as a proprietary Anstoss Image File (or AIMRES) for titles developed by Ascaron Entertainment, such as Sacred or Darkstar One, acting as a container for textures and graphical assets. Finally, in niche medical contexts, it can be associated with Analyze 7.5 stereotactic data used by AnalyzeDirect. Because of this format fragmentation, the best conversion strategy depends on the content: convert logs and models to PDF or TXT for archiving, and game textures to standard PNG or JPG for viewing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The AIM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AIM converter.
