About IPJ files
The .IPJ file extension is predominantly used as a project management file for Autodesk Inventor. These files do not contain 3D models or geometry. Instead, they act as an index, storing XML-formatted directory paths, library locations, and workspace configuration settings using UTF-16 (LE) encoding. A secondary, but notable use case is for INCA EDS Microanalysis software by Oxford Instruments, where the .IPJ file stores spectrometer project data within a proprietary Microsoft Compound file structure. Users often try to convert .IPJ files to 3D CAD formats like .STEP, .IGES, or .PDF. This always fails because standard online converters look for geometry that simply does not exist within the .IPJ file. The actual 3D data lives in associated .IPT (parts) and .IAM (assemblies) files. The primary disadvantage of the .IPJ format is this hard dependency. If you receive an .IPJ file without the accompanying parts folder, the file is functionally useless and requires a costly Autodesk subscription to resolve the missing links. Because these are closed, proprietary configuration files, typical conversion tools cannot process them into 3D models. Even though direct conversion to a solid model is impossible, our analysis engine can detect the supported underlying UTF-16 XML or MS Compound formats.
