About IPJ files
The .IPJ file extension is primarily associated with Autodesk Inventor Project files, which serve as the central nervous system for CAD designs created in Autodesk Inventor. These files do not contain the actual 3D geometry or 2D drawings; rather, they are configuration files (often formatted as XML) that tell the software where to locate the referenced parts (ref. .IPT), assemblies (ref. .IAM), and standard libraries. A major source of frustration for users is receiving a standalone .IPJ file via email without the associated data files, rendering it useless for viewing the 3D model. Furthermore, because these files use specific relative or absolute paths, moving a project between computers often breaks these links, requiring manual resolution or "Pack and Go" workflows. While the .IPJ itself cannot be converted into a 3D model like STEP or STL, the configuration data within it can be viewed by converting the file to TXT or XML to audit file paths. To convert the actual design content for archiving or client review, users must open the project in Inventor and export the linked assemblies to PDF (for 2D drawings) or STEP (for 3D interoperability). A secondary use case involves INCA software by Oxford Instruments, where the file stores microanalysis project data.
