About HRC files

The .HRC file extension usually contains 3D model hierarchy data, which defines how parts of a 3D model are linked and animated. This acts as the "skeleton" for an object, connecting a character's bones or a vehicle's moving parts like suspension and steering.

These files are heavily utilized in specific game engines. You will primarily find them in PiBoSo racing simulators (like MX Bikes), the classic Final Fantasy VII, and legacy Viewpoint Datalabs software. Modders frequently use specialized tools like 3DSimED to read, modify, and convert these files for modern simulators.

The biggest disadvantage of the .HRC format is its extreme fragmentation. A Final Fantasy VII .HRC skeleton is structurally completely different from a PiBoSo .HRC vehicle hierarchy. Because these are closed, proprietary, engine-specific files, standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot open them directly without community-built plugins. Furthermore, .HRC files usually do not contain the actual 3D geometry (the mesh); they only hold the animation and linking data.

Converting an .HRC file requires an accompanying mesh file. You typically want to convert the entire linked model into a standard format like FBX or DAE (Collada) to retain the skeleton in modern 3D editors. Standard online converters fail because they cannot process these obscure, fragmented game formats without the accompanying mesh files. Our analyzer will inspect the internal structure to determine if it is a PiBoSo hierarchy, a Square Enix skeleton, or a Viewpoint file, helping you identify the precise modding tool you need.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HRC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HCR, HEIC, LND, TST, GED, HLD and MPA files.

The HRC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HRC converter.
