.FBX (Filmbox) is a proprietary 3D file format developed by Kaydara and now owned by Autodesk. It stores 3D models, textures, skeletal rigs, animations, and scene hierarchies. Despite its popularity, the .FBX format has significant disadvantages. It is closed-source and proprietary, meaning non-Autodesk implementations rely on reverse-engineered SDKs that frequently cause import/export errors, broken rigs, or missing textures. Furthermore, embedded textures and animation tracks often inflate file sizes, making them difficult to share. .FBX files are also not natively supported by web browsers or standard mobile operating systems.
To solve these interoperability issues, conversion is heavily recommended. For web usage, AR applications, or browser viewing, convert .FBX to the modern, lightweight GLTF or GLB standards.
