About DAE files
A .DAE (Digital Asset Exchange) file is an XML-based 3D model interchange format based on the COLLADA standard, managed by the Khronos Group. It stores 3D geometry, textures, lighting, and animation data. It is supported by 3D software like Blender and Rhinoceros 3D. You can read more about it on Wikipedia. While designed as a universal standard, .DAE files are built on plain text XML. This makes them extremely large and slow to parse compared to modern binary formats. Compatibility across different 3D engines is notoriously inconsistent, often breaking rigs, animations, or texture maps when importing. They are not supported natively by web browsers. To fix compatibility issues, you must convert the file. For web rendering and AR, convert to GLTF or GLB. For game engines like Unity or Unreal, convert to FBX. For basic 3D printing or geometry sharing, convert to OBJ or STL. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

If you want to convert DAE file to SKP, DWG, STEP, DXF, GR2 or MAX, you can use Blender or similar software from the "3D Model Interchange Format" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP, FBX or PLY files to DAE, try Blender or another comparable tool in the "3D Model Interchange Format" category.
The DAE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DAE converter.
