The .HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) file is a modern raster image format based on the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. It was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and heavily adopted by Apple starting with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra. Despite its excellent compression, .HEIC has severe compatibility limits outside the Apple ecosystem. It is heavily patent-encumbered, which means it is not supported natively by major web browsers like Chrome or Firefox. Windows users often find they cannot open .HEIC files without installing paid codecs from the Microsoft Store. Sharing these files on the web, with legacy software, or with Android users frequently results in errors.
To fix these compatibility issues, users must convert .HEIC to standard formats. The best conversion target is JPG for universal compatibility or PNG if you need to retain transparency. Note that converting a .HEIC file to JPG will strip out advanced features like depth maps and "Live Photo" video data.
