About HCR files

The .HCR file extension represents a classic digital compatibility bottleneck because it usually refers to a proprietary Hallmark Greeting Card project file. Created by Hallmark Card Studio, these files are based on the Microsoft Compound document architecture. While this structure allows for complex layouts combining text, vector graphics, and raster images, it creates a significant "lock-in" problem. You cannot view an .HCR file in a web browser, nor can you open it with standard word processors like Microsoft Word. This makes sharing your designs or printing them at a commercial shop difficult without the original software.

To make an .HCR card accessible, the best workflow is converting it to PDF for high-resolution archiving and printing, or JPG/PNG for easy sharing via email or social media.

A secondary, less common use (approx. 4%) of this extension is for legacy screen recordings created by Hyperionics HyperCam. These video files often lack the modern codecs required by players like VLC or Windows Media Player. For these files, the standard solution is converting the proprietary .HCR video stream into a universally supported container like MP4 or AVI.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HCR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HRC, HEIC, JPG, PDF, BRO, BLD and PL1 files.

The HCR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HCR converter.
