To convert other file formats to the "Greeting Card Project" file type, you need software like Hallmark Card Studio or a similar tool.
The .HCR file format primarily functions as a Hallmark Card Studio greeting card project file. It stores complex layouts, text styling, clipart, and page dimensions created specifically within Hallmark Card Studio. Under the hood, these files often utilize a Microsoft Compound internal structure to organize project assets. A secondary, less common use for .HCR files is as a screen capture video recording created by Hyperionics HyperCam. Occasionally, it is also used for legacy Broderbund Half-Fold Card projects or HydroCAD Rainfall Curve Data files.
The main disadvantage of the .HCR format is its severe software dependency. Because it is a proprietary project file and not a standard image or video, you cannot view a Hallmark card project natively in web browsers, standard image viewers, or email clients. Sharing an .HCR file with a print shop or a friend will typically result in an unreadable file error unless they also pay for and install the exact same version of the software.
To share or print these cards, you must convert the design into a standard target format like PDF for high-quality printing or JPG for quick digital sharing. For HyperCam video recordings, the proprietary raw file must be exported to standard video formats like MP4 or AVI for standard media playback.
Because .HCR is a closed, proprietary project container, standard online converters often fail to process the complex layouts. Usually, only the original software can correctly render the final design or export the video.
