About GLO files

The .GLO file extension is fragmented across multiple different software ecosystems, making it a notoriously tricky format to handle. The most common variation is a software localization glossary file used by SDL Passolo or Adobe RoboHelp. These are text-based databases that store terminology translations, often utilizing UTF-16 (LE) encoding. Another frequent variation is a 3D object or scenery file used by Planetside Software Terragen or Autodesk 3ds Max. Rarely, they act as Motorola S-record firmware files for ALI Corporation chipsets or text expansion files for Instant Text.

The main disadvantage of a .GLO file is its heavy reliance on proprietary software. Localization glossaries are locked behind expensive enterprise software licenses. If you do not have Passolo or RoboHelp installed, extracting the terminology data for external vendors is frustrating. Similarly, 3D scenery .GLO files are locked to specific 3D environments and will not open in standard operating system viewers. Standard online converters frequently fail to process .GLO files because they simply guess the format based on the extension and crash when a 3D model is fed into a text parser.

For localization glossaries, you must convert the .GLO file to standard formats like CSV, TXT, or TBX to share terminology with translators using alternative CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools. For 3D models, converting to OBJ or FBX is necessary for cross-platform rendering.

Because this is a fragmented, closed format, it is often difficult to open or convert correctly. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded text format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GLO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, LRV, TOC, TST and PHC files.

The GLO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GLO converter.
