About LRV files
.LRV (Low-Resolution Video) files are automatically generated by GoPro action cameras. They are created alongside the main high-definition MP4 video files (and THM thumbnail files) to allow the GoPro mobile app to stream and preview footage smoothly without buffering over Wi-Fi. Under the hood, a .LRV file is actually just a standard MPEG-4 video file with a different extension. You can rename the extension to MP4 and open it with standard media players like VLC media player or Windows Media Player. The primary disadvantage of the .LRV format is its obscure extension. Most standard video editors, web browsers, and media players will reject a file ending in .lrv because they do not recognize the extension, even though they support the underlying video codec. Furthermore, the video quality is intentionally low (often heavily compressed to save space), meaning it is unsuitable for final production or archiving. To make these files usable outside the GoPro ecosystem without manually changing extensions, you need to convert them. For editing or sharing online, convert .LRV to standard MP4. If you want a quick looping preview, convert to GIF. For compatibility with Apple ecosystems, convert to MOV. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The LRV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LRV converter.
