About PHC files
The .PHC file is primarily a Brother embroidery design file used to store stitch commands, coordinates, and thread color instructions for automated Brother embroidery machines. Occasionally, it is also used as an accounting and payroll data archive by MRP software or a pile cap calculation file in RoboBAT RM-WIN.
To view or edit .PHC files natively, you need specialized digitizing software like Brother PE-Design or Embird. The main disadvantage of the .PHC format is its highly proprietary nature. It is a closed file format explicitly tied to Brother sewing hardware. Without paying for a $1,000+ commercial digitizing license, everyday users cannot open, preview, resize, or alter the patterns on a standard Windows or Mac computer. Web browsers and default image viewers completely fail to recognize the format.
Users typically need to convert .PHC files to standard embroidery machine formats like PES (the modern Brother standard), DST (Tajima), or EXP (Melco) to run the designs on different equipment. Converting the stitch data to standard raster images like PNG or JPG is highly recommended if you only need to preview the design visually. Note that converting to universal industrial formats like DST will often result in the loss of exact thread color metadata, preserving only the stop/trim commands.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to convert because it relies on binary machine-code instructions rather than standard graphical data. Standard online converters cannot parse the complex jump stitches and thread tension commands. If our analysis detects supported embedded preview images, viewing or conversion to a standard image format may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PHC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PHC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PHC converter.
