About EPL files
The .EPL file primarily stores Eltron Programming Language code. This is a page description language designed exclusively for direct thermal and thermal transfer printers. Logistics systems and shipping companies (like DHL) use these files to send raw layout instructions - such as barcode coordinates, font sizes, and line draws - directly to hardware. The most common software used to generate them is ZebraDesigner.
The main disadvantage of the .EPL format is that it is essentially a hardware command script, not a visual image document. You cannot simply double-click it to see the shipping label. You need a dedicated Zebra printer to print it, or a specialized emulator software to preview the layout. Furthermore, because it is proprietary to Zebra hardware, standard web browsers and image viewers will not understand the instructions. Users often need to convert .EPL to PDF or PNG simply to view the label before printing it on a standard desktop printer. For newer thermal printers, converting the legacy EPL code to the modern ZPL format is often required.
Opening or converting this format is notoriously difficult because standard document converters look for graphical data that simply isn’t there. However, standard online converters often fail for another reason: the .EPL extension is heavily fragmented. Beyond printer commands, it is also used for educational e-learning lesson files (which are actually XML files), printable label exports (which are actually PDF files), and ePhotoLab albums (which are renamed ZIP archives). We will analyze the internal hex structure to identify if it is raw printer code, an embedded PDF, or an XML dataset, and allow you to view or convert the contents whenever possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EPL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The EPL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EPL converter.
