About EPS files
The .EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format is a legacy vector graphic file type created by Adobe. It is traditionally used in professional printing and illustration workflows to store 2D vector data, text, and a low-resolution bitmap preview. You can read more about its technical specifications on Wikipedia.
Despite its history, .EPS is now widely considered an obsolete and frustrating format for everyday users. The files are deeply tied to proprietary ecosystems, meaning you often need expensive subscriptions to software like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW to open and edit them reliably. Furthermore, .EPS files are completely unsupported by modern web browsers. They also suffer from inherent technical limitations, such as a lack of true alpha-channel transparency, and bloated file sizes because they package complex PostScript print code alongside an embedded preview image.
Because of these heavy limits, converting .EPS to a modern, open format is highly recommended. For web design and digital scaling, convert to SVG. If you need to share the file for print or document review without losing vector quality, convert to PDF. For basic viewing, presentations, or social media, convert to a standard raster format like PNG or JPG.

The EPS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EPS converter.
