About ZPL files
The .zpl extension primarily refers to the Zebra Programming Language, a command-based file format used to instruct Zebra Technologies thermal printers on how to layout labels, barcodes, and text. Unlike standard images, a ZPL file contains raw ASCII code (e.g., ^XA...^XZ) rather than visual pixel data. This creates a significant usability hurdle: you cannot view the actual label design by simply double-clicking the file on Windows or macOS, nor can you print it on a standard office laser or inkjet printer without specialized drivers. To overcome this hardware dependency and preview the label content - such as shipping details or inventory barcodes - users must convert the code into a visual format. For proofing and archiving, converting ZPL to PDF is ideal. For embedding label previews on websites or internal tools, converting to PNG or JPG is recommended.
A secondary, legacy use case for this extension is the Zune Playlist. These files were used by Microsoft's discontinued Zune media players to organize music tracks. Because the Zune ecosystem is obsolete, these files are often inaccessible on modern players; converting them to standard playlist formats like M3U or M3U8 ensures your music collections remain usable on current devices.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ZPL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ZPL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZPL converter.
