About FMT files
The .fmt extension is a generic container used by dozens of unrelated software applications, making it one of the most ambiguous file types users encounter. Its most common modern use is as a Label Design File created by BarTender or NiceLabel, storing layout information for barcodes, text, and RFID tags. In enterprise environments, .fmt frequently appears as a SQL Server Bulk Copy Format File, used by Microsoft SQL Server to map data fields when importing large datasets. Legacy systems also use it for dBASE or FoxPro screen formats, and educational institutions use it for OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) definitions.
The primary disadvantage of receiving a .fmt file is identifying which software created it. A BarTender .fmt file is binary and proprietary; it requires the original paid software (often costing hundreds of dollars) just to view or print the label. Conversely, a SQL .fmt file is plain text but useless without the accompanying data file. Users often face "file association" errors because their operating system does not know which of the 50+ possible programs to launch.
Recommended Conversion Targets:
- For Labels (BarTender/NiceLabel): Convert to PDF or JPG. This allows you to proof, share, or archive the label design without requiring a license for the label software.
- For Database Settings (SQL/Oracle/dBASE): Convert or rename to TXT to view the mapping configurations in a standard text editor like Notepad++.
- For Data/Reports (Generic): If the file contains actual data, convert to CSV or XLSX to make the information accessible in Microsoft Excel.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FMT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BLDM, WK1, LABEL, FTM, RIFF, FMB, EPL, TXT, BLD, LBL, PDF, ZIP and WAV files.
The FMT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FMT converter.
