About XSN files

The .XSN file is primarily an InfoPath Form Template developed by Microsoft. It was used extensively to design, distribute, and fill out electronic forms for enterprise data collection. Under the hood, an .XSN file is actually a standard CAB (Cabinet) compressed archive. It bundles multiple files together, including an XML form definition (XSF), XML schema (XSD), XSL Transformation files (XSL) for layout rendering, and occasionally custom code scripts. A smaller percentage of .XSN files are highly proprietary Pressure Mapping Sensor Data files used by telemetry hardware from XSENSOR Technology.

The main disadvantage of the InfoPath format is that Microsoft InfoPath is discontinued legacy software. Users face significant challenges opening these files on modern operating systems or mobile devices. Furthermore, the format is proprietary and deeply tied to older Microsoft SharePoint ecosystems, making it nearly impossible to open natively in modern web browsers without specialized plugins.

Users typically need to convert .XSN templates to standard visual formats like PDF, HTML, or DOCX to preserve the layout of the form. Alternatively, enterprise users often need to extract the raw XML schemas to migrate their data structures to modern cloud platforms like Microsoft Power Apps.

Standard online converters usually fail to process .XSN files because rendering the visual layout requires executing complex XSLT stylesheets against the internal XML data, which relies entirely on the original, closed-source Microsoft rendering engine. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the visual form. However, just drag and drop your .XSN file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. We can inspect the file and show the internal text or embedded code. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like the hidden CAB archive contents - viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XSN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XML, PDF, ASICE, ZIP, TSX, DOWNLOAD, ENC, PKL, G3D, RPMSG, CRDOWNLOAD, XSI and JPG files.

The XSN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XSN converter.
