About XSF files

The .XSF extension is a notoriously ambiguous container used by completely unrelated software ecosystems, creating a frustrating "guesswork" scenario for users.

Most commonly (approx. 30%), an .XSF file is a Universal Discovery Scan File generated by Micro Focus (formerly HP) IT asset management software. These files contain detailed hardware and software inventory data collected from network devices. While they technically store data in an XML structure, they are often GZIP compressed to save space, meaning standard text editors cannot read them immediately without decompression. Users typically need to convert these to Excel or plain XML to audit asset data outside the proprietary CMS.

Alternatively, your file might be a Cal3D Skeleton File used in 3D animation (popularized by IMVU). These files define the bone hierarchy of a 3D character in XML format. While readable, they are not compatible with modern modeling tools like Blender or Autodesk Maya without specialized conversion scripts to transform them into FBX or OBJ.

Legacy use cases include the InfoPath Form Definition file (a deprecated Microsoft format) or Xion Audio Player skins (which are simply renamed ZIP archives). Because of this fragmentation, we recommend first attempting to open the file in a text editor to check for an XML header, or using a drag-and-drop tool to identify the internal signature.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XSF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CHKN, XCF, XMF, KSS, FMF and XTX files.

The XSF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XSF converter.
