Convert XSD to another file type
To convert XSD schemas to another format, you need Microsoft Visual Studio or other Developer software.
Convert a file to XSD
To convert other file formats to the "XML Schema Definition" file type, you need software like Microsoft Visual Studio or a similar tool.
About XSD files
The .XSD file extension serves two completely different purposes depending on its origin. Most commonly, it acts as an XML Schema Definition file. Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), this format specifies the exact structure, elements, and data types allowed in an associated XML document. It acts as a strict rulebook for data validation. Developers typically edit these files using IDEs like Microsoft Visual Studio or Altova XMLSpy.
Alternatively, an .XSD file can be a Cross-Stitch Embroidery Pattern. These files are created by specialized crafting software, primarily HobbyWare's Pattern Maker or PCStitch. They store complex grids, thread color palettes, and symbol mappings for embroidery projects.
Both formats suffer from major usability disadvantages. The XML version is a dense, heavily nested markup file that is entirely unreadable for non-technical business stakeholders. It lacks built-in visual diagrams. The cross-stitch version is even more restrictive: it is a proprietary, closed binary format. It will not open in web browsers or default image viewers, often forcing users to purchase expensive, outdated desktop software just to view a simple pattern.
Conversion is the most practical workaround. For developers needing to share documentation, convert the XML Schema to a PDF/A or TXT file. For crafters, converting the proprietary pattern to PDF, JPG, or PNG is highly recommended so you can print the design or view it on a tablet while working.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XSD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XSD file to XML, WSDL, JSON, PDF, JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS or PHP, you can use Microsoft Visual Studio or similar software from the "XML Document Structure Validation" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to XSD, try Microsoft Visual Studio or another comparable tool in the "XML Document Structure Validation" category.
The XSD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XSD converter.
