About X_B files

The .X_B file format is a binary-encoded 3D model used by the Parasolid geometric modeling kernel. Unlike its text-based counterpart (X_T), .X_B files compress complex CAD geometry - including topology, surfaces, and solids - into a machine-readable binary structure optimized for size and transmission speed between distinct CAD systems like Siemens NX and SolidWorks.

While efficient for storage, .X_B files present significant accessibility challenges. Because they utilize a proprietary binary schema, they cannot be opened or previewed in standard image viewers or web browsers. Furthermore, version compatibility can be strict; an .X_B file exported from a newer version of the Parasolid kernel often fails to open in older software, resulting in frustrating import errors. To overcome these barriers, users should convert .X_B files to standard formats based on their specific needs. For universal CAD editing and interoperability, convert to STEP or IGES.
