The .JT (Jupiter Tessellation) file is primarily a lightweight 3D product visualization format developed by Siemens Digital Industries Software. It is heavily used in enterprise Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) to share 3D models without distributing heavy, proprietary CAD files. These files contain polygonal mesh data, Boundary Representation (B-rep), and Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI). A rare secondary use for the .JT extension is a plain-text JSON configuration file for the CoolLED1248 mobile app.
.JT files are specialized for industrial workflows. The main disadvantage is that consumer-grade 3D viewers and 3D printing software cannot read them. They often require expensive enterprise software or specialized free viewers like Siemens JT2Go to access the underlying B-rep or PMI data. Users outside of the original engineering team will struggle to open or interact with these files.
To use these models in common applications, you must convert them. The best target formats are STEP or IGES for generic CAD editing, or STL and OBJ for 3D printing and rendering. Note that converting a .JT to STL will strip out all precision B-rep data and metadata, leaving only the polygonal mesh.
Because .JT is a highly complex engineering format, converting B-rep data accurately often requires the original CAD engine. Standard online converters frequently fail to parse the intricate geometry.
