About TORRENT files
A .torrent file is a metadata container used by the BitTorrent peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing protocol. It does not contain the actual media or software you want to download. Instead, it holds a bencoded dictionary of metadata. This includes tracker URLs, file names, folder structures, piece lengths, and SHA-1 cryptographic hashes for data verification. To open and use these files, you need a dedicated BitTorrent client such as qBittorrent, BitTorrent, or Transmission.
Users frequently try to convert .torrent files directly into media formats like MP4 or MP3. This is impossible because the .torrent file is typically under 100KB and entirely lacks audio or video data. A major disadvantage of the format is this widespread confusion, along with network restrictions - many corporate and school networks block torrent traffic entirely. Furthermore, using a torrent exposes your IP address to a public swarm, which raises privacy and security concerns.
The most practical conversion targets for a .torrent file are text-based. You can extract the info hash to convert it into a Magnet link (a standard text URL), which allows you to share the download without distributing the file itself. Alternatively, you can decode the internal bencoded data into a readable JSON or TXT file to safely inspect the tracker list and file contents before connecting to untrusted peers.
Standard online converters fail with .torrent files because they attempt to process them as media and lack a proper Bencode parser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TORRENT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The TORRENT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TORRENT converter.
