The .catpart file is a proprietary 3D CAD part file created by CATIA V5, a high-end engineering software developed by 3%A8mes">Dassault Systèmes. Engineers and designers use it heavily in the aerospace, automotive, and industrial manufacturing sectors to model highly detailed, individual mechanical components. It stores the 3D geometry, material properties, and the parametric feature tree (the step-by-step history of how the part was built).
The primary disadvantage of the .catpart format is its heavily closed, proprietary ecosystem. You cannot easily open or view a .catpart file without an expensive, specialized CAD software license. Standard document viewers and web browsers cannot read them. Furthermore, even other major professional CAD programs often struggle to import native .catpart files accurately without costly translation add-ons, causing immense friction when collaborating with external suppliers, machine shops, or clients who do not use CATIA.
To share these designs outside of the Dassault ecosystem, conversion is strictly required. For universal CAD editing and CNC machining interoperability, convert to STEP or IGES. For 3D printing and rapid prototyping, convert to a mesh format like STL or OBJ. For general 2D viewing, archiving, and non-engineer collaboration, convert to a 3D PDF. Be aware that converting a .catpart to any neutral format will preserve the final boundary representation (B-rep) geometry but will permanently strip the parametric design history.
