A .CATPart file is a proprietary 3D part design created by CATIA V5, the industry-standard software for high-end aerospace and automotive engineering by Dassault Systèmes. These files contain precise B-rep geometry, topological data, and metadata for a single mechanical component.
While .CATPart files offer immense precision, they present significant interoperability challenges. They utilize a closed, binary format that typically requires a costly CATIA license to open or edit - often costing thousands of dollars per seat. Furthermore, version incompatibility is a frequent problem; a file saved in a newer release of CATIA V5 often cannot be opened in older versions ('upward compatibility' only). Sharing these files with clients or vendors using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Blender is difficult without conversion. These are robust standards that maintain geometric precision for import into almost any CAD suite.
