About STORY files
The .STORY file extension is primarily used by Articulate Storyline, an industry-standard authoring tool for creating interactive e-learning courses. It stores slides, triggers, variables, quizzes, and embedded multimedia assets. A secondary use is by the AI-assisted writing platform NovelAI, which saves text generations as .STORY files using a standard JSON structure. The main disadvantage of Articulate .STORY files is that they are highly proprietary. They often exceed hundreds of megabytes and require an expensive subscription to Articulate 360 to open. You cannot view these files in a web browser, video player, or standard document editor. If a course author leaves an organization, recovering the original text or media assets from a .STORY file without a license becomes a major roadblock. Users typically want to convert .STORY files to .HTML5 for web hosting, MP4 for video playback, or PDF for document review. However, standard online converters fail to process them because the format does not contain pre-rendered video; it contains raw assets and logic that must be compiled by the Storyline rendering engine.
