About PBIX files
A .PBIX file is a proprietary data visualization report created by Microsoft Power BI. It stores data connections, ETL queries, internal data models, and interactive dashboard visuals. Under the hood, the file uses a standard compressed ZIP structure containing XML, JSON, and a VertiPaq columnar database.
The .PBIX format presents major compatibility challenges for everyday sharing. Power BI Desktop is strictly a Windows application, meaning macOS and Linux users cannot natively open these files. The format is also highly restrictive; sharing interactive dashboards requires the recipient to install heavy desktop software or possess a paid Power BI Pro subscription. Furthermore, because the format embeds the actual imported data, files easily bloat to hundreds of megabytes, making email distribution impossible.
To share dashboards universally, convert .PBIX to PDF for static archiving. For business meetings, convert to PPTX to present slides. If you need to extract the underlying images, themes, and metadata without installing software, rename the extension to ZIP and extract the contents.

The PBIX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PBIX converter.
