About PBIX files
A .PBIX file is the primary file format used by Microsoft Power BI Desktop to create data models and interactive reports. Internally, it acts as a compressed ZIP archive containing the data model (often highly compressed via the VertiPaq engine), report layout, and data transformation queries. While powerful, the format presents significant hurdles: it is strictly proprietary, often growing to hundreds of megabytes due to embedded datasets, and is locked to the Windows operating system - making it impossible to open natively on macOS or mobile devices without publishing to the cloud. Furthermore, sharing a raw .PBIX requires the recipient to have the same or newer version of the software and often results in version control headaches. To overcome these compatibility and size constraints, users frequently need to convert these files. For static presentation and universal viewing, converting to PDF or PPTX (PowerPoint) is ideal. For extracting the underlying data for external analysis, converting to XLSX or CSV is necessary. For sharing the report structure without the heavy data payload, converting the file to a .PBIT (Power BI Template) reduces the file size significantly.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PBIX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PBIX file to PDF, ZIP, RDL, PPT, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI or CFG, you can use Microsoft Power BI Desktop or similar software from the "Business Intelligence Reporting" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to PBIX, try Microsoft Power BI Desktop or another comparable tool in the "Business Intelligence Reporting" category.
The PBIX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PBIX converter.
