About SAM files
The .sam extension refers to two distinct file types requiring different conversion approaches.
- Ami Pro Document: A legacy word processing format created by Samna and later acquired by Lotus Development Corp. These proprietary documents were popular in the early 1990s but are now obsolete. Users often struggle to open them because modern suites like Microsoft Word dropped support for the
.sam import filter years ago. To access the content, these files must be converted to DOCX or PDF for archiving. - Sequence Alignment Map: A standard text-based format in bioinformatics used to store biological sequences aligned to a reference genome. Developed for the 1000 Genomes Project, these files are human-readable (tab-delimited) but often become unwieldy due to file sizes exceeding 100GB. Researchers typically convert them to the compressed binary equivalent, BAM, using Samtools to save disk space and improve processing speed.
- LMHOSTS Sample: A simple text file found in Windows systems (
lmhosts.sam) serving as a template for NetBIOS name resolution settings.

The SAM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SAM converter.
