About SAB files
The .SAB extension is a dual-purpose format, primarily serving as the ACIS Binary file for 3D modeling and CAD data. Developed by Spatial Corp, this format is the compact, machine-readable sibling of the text-based SAT format. It stores complex geometry, topology, and wireframe data used by major engineering platforms like AutoCAD and BricsCAD. However, the binary nature of .SAB can create major obstacles: files are strictly version-dependent. A model saved in a newer ACIS kernel often triggers compatibility errors when opened in older software, and unlike SAT, you cannot open it in a text editor to hack the version header or debug geometry.
A secondary but common use of .SAB is within the gaming industry, specifically as audio containers for titles published by Square Enix or games using the Saber Interactive engine. These are proprietary archives containing sound effects and music, completely incompatible with CAD software.
For engineering workflows, the best practice is converting .SAB to neutral exchange formats like STEP (ISO 10303) or IGES for maximum compatibility across different CAD vendors. For rapid prototyping and 3D printing, converting to STL is essential. If you are dealing with a game file, the goal is extraction rather than conversion; you will likely need audio tools to convert the internal streams to WAV or MP3.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SAB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted STP, SAT, STEP, DWG, SCDOC, SLDPRT, SDB, ZIP, XPT, JPG and SAV files.
The SAB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SAB converter.
