The .XPT file format primarily functions as a SAS Transport Data File. Developed by the SAS Institute, this format was created to standardize the transfer of statistical datasets between completely different computing architectures (like mainframes and PCs) without corrupting data integrity. A secondary, but notable, use of .XPT files is for storing microplate reader experiment data generated by Molecular Devices SoftMax Pro or Tecan Magellan lab software. Rarely, it acts as a report file in SAP Crystal Reports or as an XPCOM component for Mozilla applications.
Working with .XPT files outside of their native environments is frustrating. The SAS Transport format is highly specific; standard tools like Microsoft Excel or basic text editors cannot read the binary structure. Unless you are an enterprise user with an expensive SAS license or a developer comfortable writing parsing scripts in Python or R, your data is effectively locked inside the file. Similarly, lab-generated experiment files require proprietary software to read the Microsoft Compound data structure.
