About RVM files

The .RVM file format is a proprietary 3D plant design review model generated by AVEVA PDMS and AVEVA Everything3D. These files contain complex, large-scale industrial 3D models including piping, HVAC, structural components, and equipment used in oil, gas, and marine engineering. They are typically opened using Autodesk Navisworks or AVEVA's native review tools.

Users need to convert .RVM files because the format is highly restrictive and heavily closed. These files are inherently disconnected from standard CAD workflows. They are proprietary, cannot be opened natively by web browsers, and require expensive enterprise subscriptions to specialized viewing software just to render the basic geometry. Sharing an .RVM file with a contractor using standard CAD tools usually leads to immediate compatibility roadblocks and project delays.

The best conversion targets for .RVM files are NWD (Navisworks Document), DWG for standard CAD integration, or OBJ and STEP for universal 3D manipulation. Converting to these formats usually strips the specialized AVEVA attribute data (often stored in a companion ATT file) but preserves the raw 3D geometry needed for spatial planning or clash detection.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because it utilizes an undocumented structure designed specifically to lock users into the AVEVA ecosystem. Standard online converters fail to process it because often only the original software or officially licensed plugins can properly parse the proprietary tessellated meshes and primitive data. If our analysis detects a supported embedded mesh format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RVM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NWD, VRM, FBX, VPJ, CDW, PBIX, JPG, PDF, BREP, MDL and DWG files.

FAQ

If you want to convert RVM file to NWD, DWG, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D or STL, you can use AVEVA PDMS or similar software from the "3D Plant Design Review" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to RVM, try AVEVA PDMS or another comparable tool in the "3D Plant Design Review" category.

The RVM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RVM converter.
