To convert other file formats to the "CAD Solid Model" file type, you need software like FreeCAD or a similar tool.

About BREP files

The .BREP file is a Boundary representation 3D CAD model. It defines solid mathematical objects by their topological limits, such as faces, edges, and vertices. Engineers and designers use this format to store high-precision geometry natively generated by the Open CASCADE Technology kernel.

You can open and edit .BREP files using open-source tools like FreeCAD or other specialized software built on the Open CASCADE framework.

Despite its mathematical precision, the .BREP format presents severe limits for general use. It is deeply tied to its native software kernel, meaning mainstream commercial CAD programs often struggle to import raw .BREP files without geometry errors. Furthermore, the format does not store textures, lighting, or materials, making it useless for visual rendering. You cannot open it in a standard web browser, and 3D printing slicers cannot read it because they require polygon meshes, not pure boundary math.

To solve these problems, you must convert the file. For further CAD editing, convert to STEP or IGES to retain exact mathematical surfaces across different platforms. For 3D printing, convert to STL or 3MF, which approximates the curves into a triangulated mesh (note: you will lose infinite scaling precision). For web display or 3D rendering, convert to GLTF or OBJ. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing heavy software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BREP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FCSTD, FCSTD1, RVM and STEP files.

FAQ

If you want to convert BREP file to STEP, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use FreeCAD or similar software from the "3D CAD Boundary Representation" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to BREP, try FreeCAD or another comparable tool in the "3D CAD Boundary Representation" category.

The BREP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BREP converter.
