About MDL files
The .MDL extension is a notorious source of confusion because it is shared by three completely different industries: video game development, mathematical simulation, and fashion design.
Most commonly, an .MDL file is a compiled 3D Model used by the Source Engine (developed by Valve Corporation) for games like Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, and Garry's Mod. These files contain geometry, animations, and bounding boxes in a binary format optimized for real-time rendering. The main challenge is that they are "cooked" game assets; they are not designed to be opened directly in 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk Maya for editing. To modify them, users typically must "decompile" them back into intermediate formats (like SMD or DMX) before they can be converted to standard interchange formats.
Alternatively, your file might be a MathWorks Simulink model. Historically, Simulink saved system diagrams and simulation settings as .MDL files before shifting to the newer SLX format. Legacy .MDL files may struggle with compatibility in newer MATLAB versions or lack the compression benefits of the XML-based .SLX standard.
Less frequently, an .MDL file is a pattern file from Lectra Modaris, a CAD suite used in the fashion industry for apparel design. These are strictly proprietary and often require conversion to DXF or .AAMA for use in other plotters or cutting machines.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Game Modding/Editing: Convert Valve .MDL to OBJ, FBX, or GLTF. This makes the mesh accessible in modern tools like Blender or Unity.
For Simulation/Engineering: Convert legacy Simulink .MDL to SLX (for modern features) or PDF (for documentation and sharing block diagrams without requiring a license).
For Apparel/CAD: Convert Lectra .MDL to DXF for broad plotter compatibility.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your MDL file.
If you want to convert MDL file to RON, SLX, DAE, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB or C4D, you can use Source SDK or similar software from the "Source Engine 3D Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to MDL, try Source SDK or another comparable tool in the "Source Engine 3D Model" category.
The MDL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MDL converter.
