The .raw file extension is a generic container used for unprocessed data captured directly from a sensor. Unlike standard files, .raw files often lack a file header, meaning the interpreting software must be manually told how to read the binary data (e.g., image dimensions, bit depth, or sample rate). Common varieties include Panasonic and Leica digital camera images, headerless binary data used in Adobe Photoshop, and raw PCM audio.
A significant portion of these files are specialized scientific data - specifically X-ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns from Bruker AXS or Rigaku instruments, and material testing data from Instron Bluehill software. The main disadvantage of this format is its ambiguity and proprietary lock-in; without the specific originating software or metadata, the file appears as digital noise. For general use, these files are too large and incompatible with web browsers.
