About RAW files
The .RAW file extension is a generic, highly fragmented label used to indicate unprocessed data captured directly from a hardware sensor, scientific instrument, or software engine. Because "raw" simply implies a lack of processing, these files have no universal standard. They are heavily utilized for uncompressed digital camera imagery, X-ray diffraction results from instruments like Bruker AXS or Rigaku Miniflex, circuit simulations in LTspice, mass spectrometry via Thermo Scientific Xcalibur, and even RFID/Sub-GHz radio signal captures from the Flipper Zero. Emulators also use the format; for example, the Dolphin emulator uses .RAW for virtual SD cards, while older Sony PlayStations used it for VAG audio.
The primary disadvantage of .RAW files is their proprietary and unstructured nature. Because they bypass standard compression and formatting to retain 100% of the sensor's original readout, they are characterized by massive file sizes. Worse, a .RAW file is effectively unreadable by standard operating systems or web browsers without knowing exactly which device generated it. Scientific .RAW files often lock you into expensive, specialized software (like Bruker Commander or Instron Bluehill) just to view your own data.
Converting .RAW files is essential to extract locked data into universally readable formats. For digital photography, convert to JPG or WEBP for web sharing, or DNG for standardized archival editing. For scientific instruments and LTspice simulations, converting the output to CSV or XLSX is necessary to plot the numerical data in tools like Microsoft Excel. For raw PCM audio captures, target WAV or MP3. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software on convert.guru.

The RAW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RAW converter.
