The .UYVY file extension represents a raw, uncompressed video stream encoded using the YUV 4:2:2 color subsampling scheme. Unlike standard container formats (like MP4 or MOV), a UYVY file typically lacks a file header, meaning it contains strictly pixel data with no embedded metadata regarding resolution (width/height), frame rate, or audio tracks. This format is common in professional broadcast capture cards, frame grabbers, and tools like FFmpeg.
Because .UYVY files are effectively just a massive stream of byte data, they present significant challenges for standard users. First, the file sizes are enormous - gigabytes of data for just minutes of footage - making them impractical for email or cloud storage. Second, because they lack headers, standard players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime often fail to open them, or display a garbled "static" image because they cannot auto-detect the frame dimensions. To make these files usable, you should convert them to container formats. For web sharing and general playback, convert to H.264 MP4. For archiving without quality loss, wrap them in an MKV container. For professional video editing in software like Adobe Premiere Pro, transcode to ProRes or DNxHD.
