About DNG files
A .DNG (Digital Negative) is a raw image format created by Adobe Systems based on the TIFF standard. It stores uncompressed, unprocessed sensor data directly from digital cameras. Apple also utilizes the .DNG container for its ProRAW format on iPhones, embedding computational photography data alongside the raw image.
To natively open, edit, and "develop" a .DNG file, professional photo editors like Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop are typically required.
The main disadvantage of a .DNG file is its massive file size, which frequently exceeds 25MB to 100MB per image. Because it is a raw format, you cannot easily upload a .DNG to social media, embed it in a web browser, or send it via standard email attachments. While it retains maximum dynamic range for extreme color correction, it is an entirely impractical format for daily viewing, quick sharing, or web publishing.
To share your photos online, convert .DNG to JPG or WEBP. If you need a smaller but lossless format for continued editing, convert to PNG. For archiving or high-quality commercial printing, use TIFF. The DNG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DNG converter.
