Convert XY to another file type
To convert XY diffraction files to another format, you need OriginPro or other Data software.
Convert a file to XY
To convert other file formats to the "Scientific Instrument Data File" file type, you need software like OriginPro or a similar tool.
About XY files
A .XY file is a scientific data format that stores information as pairs of X and Y coordinates. The most common use case is storing X-ray diffraction (XRD) scan results from instruments measuring crystalline structures, often recording 2-theta angles against diffraction intensity. You can plot and analyze these files using specialized software like OriginPro, X'Pert HighScore Plus, or Tecplot.
The main disadvantage of the .XY format is its lack of standardization. While usually plain ASCII text, different manufacturers like Bruker AXS or PANalytical use different headers or delimiters. This makes it difficult to share the data with non-scientists or parse it automatically in basic spreadsheet software without manual cleanup. Furthermore, raw XRD files can contain hundreds of thousands of data points, causing basic text editors to freeze or crash when opening them.
To make this data usable, conversion is highly recommended. For data editing, scripting, or importing into modern database tools, convert .XY to CSV or XLSX. For archiving or sharing raw measurements in a universal format, convert to TXT. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XY file to TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN, LOG or NFO, you can use OriginPro or similar software from the "X-ray Diffraction Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to XY, try OriginPro or another comparable tool in the "X-ray Diffraction Data Storage" category.
The XY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XY converter.
