About GDI files
A .gdi file (Gigabyte Disc Image) is a metadata text file used to map and structure raw 1GB disc dumps of Sega Dreamcast games. It acts as an index for emulators like Redream or Flycast, directing the software to read the accompanying .bin and .raw data tracks. A small percentage of .gdi files also exist as Graphics Device Interface data files for Mitsubishi Electric FR-Configurator software, but game dumps are by far the most common use case. The major disadvantage of the raw .gdi format is its multi-file structure. Because a single game requires one .gdi file alongside several bulky .bin or .raw track files, game libraries quickly become cluttered, and a game will fail to load if a single track is renamed or moved. Furthermore, 1GB GD-ROM dumps are uncompressed and waste considerable disk space. To fix this, convert .gdi to .chd (Compressed Hunks of Data) for archiving and emulation; it merges all tracks into one highly compressed, emulator-friendly file. If you intend to play backups on original Dreamcast hardware, convert to .cdi (DiscJuggler), which downsizes the image to fit onto a standard 700MB CD-R.
