About GDI files
The .gdi extension primarily functions as the descriptor file for Sega Dreamcast GD-ROM dumps. Unlike a standard ISO file, a Dreamcast dump is a split set of files: the small .gdi text file acts as a 'cue sheet' that maps the location of multiple large track files (usually bin and raw) contained in the same folder. Users typically encounter this format when downloading '1:1' raw backups of Dreamcast games, which preserve the full 1GB density of the original proprietary Gigabyte Disc media.
The main limitation for users is that .gdi files are unwieldy for storage and impossible to burn directly to standard media. Because the original GD-ROMs held 1.2GB of data, a raw .gdi dump exceeds the 700MB capacity of a standard CD-R. Furthermore, the multi-file structure creates clutter and breaks if a single track file is misplaced.
For Emulation (playing on PC/Android/Raspberry Pi), the industry standard is to convert the .gdi (and its tracks) into a single CHD (Compressed Hunks of Data) file. This format is lossless, supports single-file convenience, and reduces file size by 30-50% by compressing the empty padding data found on GD-ROMs. For Burning to real hardware, users must convert the file to CDI (DiscJuggler) format, which downsamples audio and video to fit onto a 700MB CD-R while retaining bootability via the Mil-CD exploit.
*Note: In industrial automation, a .gdi file may also be a parameter configuration file for Mitsubishi Electric FR-Series inverters (VFDs), created by FR-Configurator2. These are completely unrelated to the game files.*
Convert.Guru analyzes your GDI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GDI file to CDI, CHD, ISO, CUE, EXE, BIN, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP or MAP, you can use chdman or similar software from the "Dreamcast GD-ROM Descriptor" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to GDI, try chdman or another comparable tool in the "Dreamcast GD-ROM Descriptor" category.
The GDI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GDI converter.
