Convert PVZ to another file type

To convert PVZ 3D models to another format, you need PTC Creo View or other 3D software.

Convert a file to PVZ

To convert other file formats to the "Compressed 3D Visualization" file type, you need software like PTC Creo View or a similar tool.

About PVZ files

A .pvz file is a ProductView or Creo Parametric Viewable Zip file. It is a compressed 3D product visualization format primarily used for sharing lightweight digital mockups of complex CAD assemblies. Engineers and managers use this format for design review, collaboration, and visualization within Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) workflows without needing the original, heavy CAD software.

The primary software used to open these files is PTC Creo View. Because a .pvz file is essentially a standard ZIP archive, you can use unzipping utilities like 7-Zip to extract the internal contents, which typically consist of a main pvs structure file and multiple ol geometry files. For more background on the underlying compression, see the ZIP file format Wikipedia page.

Users often need to convert .pvz files because they are highly restrictive. The format is a proprietary, downstream "viewable" format, meaning it lacks the full parametric history of the original CAD design. It is heavily optimized for fast rendering rather than editing. Real-world disadvantages include tying users to the PTC software ecosystem and the inability to natively import these files into standard engineering platforms like SolidWorks or AutoCAD.

The best conversion targets for 3D compatibility are universal formats like STEP, IGES, or OBJ. However, because .pvz stores lightweight faceted mesh data (tessellations) instead of precise solid surfaces (B-rep/NURBS), converting it to a solid format like STEP will result in fragmented, uneditable geometry. You will lose the mathematical precision of the original design.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it acts as a closed wrapper containing specialized, proprietary 3D tessellations. Standard online converters fail because they lack the reverse-engineered libraries to decode the internal ol files. Often, only the original PTC Creo software can properly read or export the accurate data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PVZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PVS, OL, PVA, ZIP, STP, 3D, PDF, PTC, STEP, DAT, 7Z, INDD and JPG files.

The PVZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PVZ converter.
