About DAT files

The .DAT extension is the ultimate "mystery box" of file formats, representing a generic data container that can hold anything from video streams to system configurations. The most frequent and frustrating use case for general users is the winmail.dat file - a proprietary Microsoft Outlook format (TNEF) that encapsulates valid attachments (like PDF invoices or DOCX contracts) but renders them inaccessible to non-Outlook users (e.g., on Gmail or Apple Mail). Users effectively get a locked box instead of their expected document. Beyond email, older Video CDs (VCD) store MPEG-1 video in .DAT files, which modern players often fail to recognize. Games like Minecraft and SimCity 4 also use this extension for binary assets and level data, which are proprietary and generally uneditable.
