Convert PVS to another file type
To convert PVS sessions to another format, you need PTC Creo View or other 3D software.
Convert a file to PVS
To convert other file formats to the "CAD Visualization File" file type, you need software like PTC Creo View or a similar tool.
About PVS files
A .PVS file is a PTC Creo Viewable Session file, originally generated by PTC Creo Parametric and viewed via PTC Creo View. It functions as a lightweight 3D visualization structure that holds an assembly tree and points to associated component files (often OL or PVZ formats). Engineers use this format to share 3D models with clients or non-technical teams for review without exposing the proprietary, editable CAD geometry. In rare cases, .PVS files can also be raw video streams from PVR/DVR systems, static code analysis outputs from PVS-Studio, or configuration files for Parallels Desktop.
The main disadvantage of the CAD-based .PVS format is its heavily proprietary nature. It is intentionally locked down to protect intellectual property. Users are forced to maintain a software environment equipped with PTC tools just to open, view, or mark up the file. Furthermore, because it often strips out the mathematical feature history (B-rep data) and leaves only lightweight faceted geometry, reversing it into an editable parametric model is nearly impossible.
When conversion is required, the best targets are usually STEP, IGES, or 3D PDF for broad compatibility, or STL for 3D printing, though parametric history will be completely lost. Explain why this file format is difficult to open or convert: it is a closed, proprietary wrapper designed to restrict data extraction. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PVS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PVS file to MCS, SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR or PIF, you can use PTC Creo View or similar software from the "CAD Visualization Structure" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to PVS, try PTC Creo View or another comparable tool in the "CAD Visualization Structure" category.
The PVS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PVS converter.
