About PVT files

The .pvt extension represents three distinct file types, causing significant confusion for users.

  1. Private Media Vault File: Most commonly (approx. 53%), these are hidden files associated with privacy apps like Keepsafe Photo Vault. In many cases, these are simply ZIP archives or renamed image files (JPG, MP4) designed to be invisible to the standard Android/iOS gallery. Users often encounter these when recovering data from a backup or exploring phone storage. The main "disadvantage" is that they are intentionally obfuscated; however, they can often be opened simply by renaming the extension to ZIP, JPG, or MP4.
  2. Mislabeled Apple Live Photo: A common iOS glitch (approx. 28%) causes Apple Live Photos transferred via AirDrop or email to arrive as .pvt files instead of the standard HEIC. These files contain both the still image and the video component (MOV) but are unrecognized by Windows or non-Apple software. The solution is often to rename the file to HEIC or convert it to JPG for broad compatibility.
  3. Dynojet Power Vision Tune: For motorcycle enthusiasts, this is a proprietary engine tune file used by Dynojet Power Vision devices. These files store fuel maps and ECU parameters. They cannot be converted to standard text formats and require the Dynojet Power Core software to view or edit.

Recommendation: If you suspect the file is a photo, try renaming it or using a file identifier. For archiving or sharing, convert recovered media to PDF or JPG.
