About ACSM files
ACSM (Adobe Content Server Message) files are strictly digital license tokens, not the actual eBook files containing text or images. They function as a cryptographic receipt used exclusively by Adobe Digital Editions to communicate with Adobe's servers, validate a purchase, and download the actual content - typically a DRM-protected EPUB or PDF.
The primary limitation of ACSM files is that they are unreadable on most devices. You cannot open them in Kindle, Apple Books, or standard PDF readers. They often come with strict Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions, expire after a set period if not redeemed, and lock content to a specific Adobe ID. This proprietary lock-in prevents users from freely archiving their library or reading on their preferred hardware.
To make the content usable, the ACSM file must first be exchanged for the actual book file. Once the EPUB or PDF is retrieved, users often need to convert these files to MOBI or AZW3 for Kindle compatibility, or to a standard .PDF/A for long-term archiving without proprietary dependencies. Our tools help you manage the file formats resulting from this process.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ACSM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ACSM file to PDF, EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, AZW, KFX, PRC, LIT, OPF, CBZ, CBR or CB7, you can use Adobe Digital Editions or similar software from the "eBook Download Token" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The ACSM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ACSM converter.
