About PVR files

The .PVR extension serves two distinct but common purposes: hardware-optimized textures and digital video recordings.

1. PowerVR Texture (Graphics & Gaming):
Most commonly, a .PVR file is a container for textures compressed using PowerVR Texture Compression (PVRTC). Developed by Imagination Technologies, these files are widely used in mobile gaming and embedded systems (especially older iOS devices) to store graphics that can be read directly by the GPU.

The Problem: PVRTC is a lossy, hardware-specific format. Most standard image viewers cannot display them, and they are incompatible with web browsers or desktop editing tools like Adobe Photoshop without specialized plugins.

The Solution: For editing or viewing, users should convert these textures to standard raster formats like PNG (lossless) or JPG. For use in modern PC game development, converting to DDS or KTX is often preferred.

2. Personal Video Recorder (Video):
Alternatively, .PVR files are video recordings created by set-top boxes (such as Wondermedia or Wintal devices). These are often MPEG transport streams wrapped in a proprietary container.

The Problem: These recordings are designed for playback on the specific TV box that recorded them. They frequently fail to open in standard media players like Windows Media Player due to non-standard headers or encryption.

The Solution: To watch these recordings on a PC or mobile device, convert them to widely supported video containers like MP4 or MKV. Just drag and drop to determine the format, view, and convert it.

The PVR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PVR converter.
