About OVPN files
A .ovpn file is an OpenVPN connection profile. It stores the network routing directives, server addresses, port settings, and cryptographic certificates necessary to establish a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel.
These files are natively managed by OpenVPN Connect, but they are also widely generated and supported by commercial privacy providers like ProtonVPN and enterprise tools like Pritunl.
The primary disadvantage of the .ovpn format is its lack of flexibility across different networking tools. Many providers embed large RSA certificates and private keys directly inside the file. This inline format makes the file bulky, hard to edit on mobile devices, and difficult to troubleshoot if connection errors occur. Additionally, sharing a raw .ovpn file is a massive security risk if it contains hardcoded private keys or active user credentials.
To safely inspect the routing rules or troubleshoot connection errors, convert your file to TXT. If you are deploying the profile to a generic Linux networking daemon, convert it to CONF. For archiving multiple server profiles into a single package, convert to ZIP. Drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OVPN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OVPN file to CRT, CONF, APC, PEM, P12, XML, SCX, EPC, INI, CFG, CONFIG or JSON, you can use OpenVPN Connect or similar software from the "VPN Client Connection Settings" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to OVPN, try OpenVPN Connect or another comparable tool in the "VPN Client Connection Settings" category.
The OVPN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OVPN converter.
