About OVPN files
A .OVPN file is a configuration script used by OpenVPN and compatible VPN clients (such as ProtonVPN or Pritunl) to establish secure encrypted tunnels. These text-based files contain vital directives like the remote server address, port, protocol (UDP/TCP), and often include embedded security certificates and private keys within XML-like tags.
While .OVPN files are human-readable, users commonly struggle with issues when trying to deploy them on older hardware routers or strict VPN clients that do not support "inline" (embedded) certificates. In these cases, the file fails to load unless the certificates are extracted into separate CRT, KEY, or PEM files. Additionally, simply viewing the configuration on a mobile device or sharing the settings without an installed editor can be difficult. To resolve these compatibility issues, you can convert the file to TXT for universal editing, PDF for secure archiving of network documentation, or parse the file to extract the embedded cryptographic keys for use with specific hardware firewalls.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OVPN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted VPN, TXT, CONF, APC, PDF, NPVT, TAR, ZIP, XML, HC, BIN, JSON and CONFIG files.
The OVPN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OVPN converter.
