About N64 files
A .N64 file is a binary image (ROM) of a Nintendo 64 game cartridge, containing the exact game code, textures, and audio data dumped from the physical chip. While these files are the standard for playing retro games on emulators like Project64 or Mupen64Plus, users often face a significant problem known as "endianness" (byte ordering). The .N64 extension typically denotes a Little Endian format (optimized for PCs), whereas the original Nintendo hardware and many flash carts (like the EverDrive) require Big Endian data (commonly associated with the Z64 extension).
This mismatch frequently causes "black screen" errors or garbled graphics when loading files onto authentic hardware or strict emulators. To resolve this, users must often "convert" the file by byte-swapping it to Z64 (Big Endian) or V64 (Byte Swapped). For storage and web transfer, these files are highly redundant and should be converted to ZIP or 7Z archives, which can reduce the file size by up to 60%.
Convert.Guru analyzes your N64 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert N64 file to Z64, ISO, WAD, EEP, CIA, SRM, V64, EXE, BIN, CUE, PAK or PK3, you can use Project64 or similar software from the "Nintendo 64 Game ROM" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The N64 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our N64 converter.
