About STATE files

A .STATE file is a generic file extension used to save the exact condition of a software application or a video game emulator at a specific point in time. For emulators like DeSmuME, RetroArch, or Dolphin, these files act as "save states" - an instantaneous snapshot of the emulated console's RAM, CPU registers, and hardware state. Beyond gaming, software like GigaTribe, Ubisoft Connect, and Apple macOS use .STATE files to resume interrupted downloads, track installation steps, or index Spotlight search data using underlying structures like XML, JSON, or binary data. Because .STATE files are highly proprietary, they are exceptionally difficult to share or migrate. An emulator save state is locked to the specific program - and often the exact version - that created it. You cannot directly load a FCEUX Nintendo save state in another emulator, because their memory dumping methods differ. Furthermore, if the file stores a crashed application dump, it may be unreadable without developer tools. These harsh limits mean users frequently need to convert or extract the contents of .STATE files to human-readable formats to diagnose crashes, or convert them into standard in-game battery saves (like SAV) to move their game progress to physical hardware. If you are trying to recover data, you should convert text-based .STATE files to JSON or XML for web and editing use, or TXT for archiving configuration logs. If the file is compressed, you must extract it to access the core data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your STATE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SRM, AUTO, GGZ, SAV, STATE1, SAVE, N64, TXT, DAT, HTML and EXE files.
